Why Staycations Are Cooler Than You Think

Aloha from pool side

Staycations might not inspire the thought of relaxing beaches, tiny umbrella drinks, or days on end of pure fun. However, before you write them off totally, consider a staycation for your next vacation. By staycation, we mean taking off work but staying at home. Trust us, it’s much cooler than you think.

Here’s why:

1. Discover Your History

How often do you see the history in your town? There are likely a few museums close by, historic markers, unique restaurants, or fun shops that you don’t frequent that often.

Even if you live in a small town, travel to the next biggest city. Visit an art gallery. Give yourself the luxury of a matinee movie in the middle of the week. Take in some beautiful views.

2. Take Time Away From the Rush

When you book a vacation, you have to pull out all the stops. First you might have to plan a road trip or book a plane flight. Then you have to pack your bags and help your kids pack their bags if you have them. And, don't forget once you are on the road you have to pay for a hotel, food, drinks, snacks, and a slew of other things on your list.

Wouldn’t it be nice just to skip all that and give yourself the gift of time instead? With a staycation, you can spend your days off of work to get organized. Breathe. Take a yoga class. Finally take the time to read a book or learn about investments or plant a garden. Spend time with your family. Do nothing. It is completely up to you. Doesn’t that sound invigorating?

3. Save Tons of Money

It’s no secret that vacations are expensive. A few years ago the Bureau of Labor and Statistics reported that the average family spends about $1,415 every year to travel with the majority of that being spent on transportation. So, if you opt to not take a vacation and go for a staycation instead, you can save your family over a thousand dollars this year and likely more. You could put that money in a savings account for emergencies or the holidays, and you’ll be well on your way to having a financially healthy year.

Ultimately, traveling somewhere for a vacation can sometimes be more of a headache than it’s worth. Not only is it incredibly expensive, but it takes time, energy, and effort to pack bags, travel with your family and get to your destination. Many people come back from their vacation feeling as though they need another one, and sometimes the hassle of unpacking and getting back into your routine can be draining.

With a staycation, you get the luxury of being off of work, but you don’t have to go anywhere. You can take pleasure in being a tourist in your city, catching up on projects around your house you’ve been putting off, and saving money all at the same time. For all those reasons, you should consider a staycation next time you want to take off work. As we said, they are way cooler than you think.
